Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S) Safety

Course Overview

The Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S) Safety course offers participants the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to identify and manage risks associated with hydrogen sulfide gas and to respond to gas exposures and other emergencies appropriately.
H₂S gas is colorless and can be poisonous and flammable. It is prevalent in oil and gas industries, wastewater treatment facilities, and confined spaces. Even in small amounts, it can kill a person within minutes.
This course is aimed at workers and will help them understand the basic properties of H₂S gas, symptoms of exposure, detection and emergency response methods that fulfill the OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1000 and ANSI Z390.1 standards. We will also teach participants how to use detection equipment and the appropriate response equipment to control exposure.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • explain hydrogen sulfide gas’s physical and chemical properties,
  • identify work settings that may contain H₂S,
  • understand the symptoms of exposure and the toxic effects of H₂S on the body,
  • use gas detection and monitoring equipment,
  • implement prescribed H₂S zone control work practices, and H₂S exposure control measures,
  • choose and use the right respiratory protective equipment, such as SCBA and air-line respirators, and
  • perform gas H₂S emergency response, including gas H₂S emergency rescue and evacuation.
  • Follow the safety requirements to control H₂S exposure required by OSHA, ANSI, and the industry.

Who Should Enroll

  • Personnel from the Oil and Gas Industry
  • Workers from Drilling, Refineries, and Petrochemicals
  • Maintenance and Operations Plant Personnel
